Hof Architects create a house which works with a challenging topography

A sloping house, moulded to the surrounding topography is another exciting design by Hof Architects. The site is located on the hill that surrounds Silveira Beach, south of the city of Garopaba in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

The project demonstrates a design solution on a challenging site which fulfils the focused requirements of a client, whilst providing a clear, readable design concept in relation to the landscape. This house turns the difficulty of a steep hill into a strong and central concept: it is an interpretation of a single-storey house on a slope. Since the planning constraints only allow a single-story buildings in the area, the architects have solved the issue by bending the floor to stay as close to the natural slope of the landscape as possible and minimize impact on the site.

The house comprises of a swimming pool, a panoramic terrace overlooking the ocean, an outside patio, three bedrooms and an open plan living room. There is a simple layout of the ground floor with a full height sliding glass connecting the pool, the outside patio, the open kitchen and the living room.

It effectively merges all these elements into one space and blurs the line between inside and outside. The lower level contains bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a view into the pool by a window in the internal corridor. Both levels are connected on each side of the house to create a continuous loop of movement and energy.

The roof of this sea-facing holiday house is used as a terrace to maximise its utilization and enlarge the view of the ocean. Three sides of the house are glazed to provide views across the ocean and surrounding hills intensifying the experience of the site's natural beauty.
