Even before Europe’s tallest building, the proposed London Bridge Tower (the Shard of Glass) has broken ground, a second tower on the same site, also by Renzo Piano has been unveiled. Piano says of the new building, “My vision is that New London Bridge House becomes a building with its own character; strong compelling and visible, yet not competing with the Shard." The £400 million office and shopping development spanning 600,000 sq ft has already been dubbed “Baby Shard”. Flamboyant property developer Irvine Sellar said that he hoped that the project would form the kernel of a new “London Bridge quarter”, breathing fresh life into the busy transport hub. A bigger bus station will be constructed to the north of the building, with 21 stands, replacing the existing 13-stand station. An office tower that was built in the 1970s will be demolished to make way for the new structure which will retain the name of the existing building.
