Spectacular house on a site where others thought it was impossible to build
The client had bought a spectacular wooded seaside site cheaply because it was believed that the steep slope and underlying ground conditions made the location unbuildable.
Working closely with the civil and structural engineers, The Manser Practice Architects developed a scheme where by placing a two storey ‘box' on a concrete pole the area of foundations was reduced to a minimum - but achieved strength through depth and penetration of the ground strata to the rock below.
The resultant four bedroom house appears to ‘float' in the trees. The gloss black cladding panels also allow it to disappear into and reflect the changing colours of the surrounding vegetation. Costs were contained, after spending heavily below ground, by using simple materials, concrete floors, fixed windows and simple vent louvres.
The result was a reasonably priced, spectacular house on a site where others thought it was impossible to build.
