Lugo's Former Prison is rehabilitated into a Cultural Centre by CREUSeCARRASCO

The redevelopment - also named the ‘rehabilitation' - of Lugo's former prison is now underway with the space being transformed into a new cultural centre. The architects, CREUSeCARRASCO arquitectos, have taken the original spatial arrangement with the small space of cells and the prominence of discipline into the design concept. Unlike its past, the prison will now be open to the public and act as a display for the appreciation of cultural and social values.

With such a distinctive personality, the areas within the prison will be rearranged through opening partitions to create more flexible spaces. The result is an intervention which barely changes the layout of the original building. Instead it is now conceived as ‘a journey of relationship, experimentation, information and exchange.' (CREUSeCARRASCO arquitectos) There will be multi-purpose spaces, each devoted to an art and culture and linked by varying routes, giving the visitor many ways of looking around.

The spaces will incorporate a selection of an auditorium, library, patio-restaurant, multi-purpose room, seminar rooms and theatre; all of them with an exterior projection and links to the city. On the outside the centre will be accessible to pedestrians via street Lopez Anxo which is being redesigned as a boulevard. The surrounding spaces will be linked together by using the same paving stones and extend towards the bus station and area of Soto Freire Street.
