Gleaming French restaurant in heart of Seoul completed by local firm BANG by MIN
This modest 306 sq m restaurant in Seoul, Korea is a recently completed project from emerging local firm BANG by MIN. Led by Sae Min Oh, the team has created an intimate dining experience in the Gangnam area which stands out from its neighbours with its bold architectural form, punctuating the monotone buildings in the street with a shot of bright white.
Originally a basic brick building constructed in the 1980s, the structure is now a modernised gleaming white form. Internally, a range of colours has been implemented on the ground floor to segment the volume for different uses: the golden areas are the most public as they line the access points for the restaurant; orange sections are neutral semi-public spaces; and the areas decorated with purple furnishings are the most private.
Sae Min Oh details: “I wanted to express the spatial harmony of East and West. I think Eastern spaces follow the world of harmony and have the more delicate components, while the Western spaces follow that of control and order. I wanted Korea and France with the concepts different from each other to strike the balance between them and to be one as another world.”
For the Seoul-based firm, the white base of the restaurant presents a moderate and concise background for the client to host visitors, punctuated by natural wood inserts on the second floor for a contemporary feel. The entire project is arranged in an ‘L’ shape so that users can look out onto a pine garden; the restaurant is thus entitled ‘La Ville de Pins’, or ‘Pine Village’.
