Fresh initiative to engage children with horticulture revealed for Wynyard Quarter, NZ

Yesterday, educational organisation The Garden to Table Trust unveiled vivid plans to transform a 1,500 sq m plot of land in Wynyard Quarter into a colourful garden for use in its Garden to Table programme. The organisation works with local schools and individuals to teach children about healthy food through hands-on experience with planting, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh produce.

Designed by Opus International, the new Garden to Table at Wynyard Quarter in Auckland, NZ will provide a longed-for headquarters for this important organisation which actively looks to positively inspire children’s food choices. Catherine Bell, Trust founder and chair, said: “This amazing project has been in the planning for some time now and it’s extraordinary to finally see it in colour. We’re thrilled with the plans by Opus.

“The project is not without its hurdles though! We’re working very hard behind the scenes to raise the essential and quite substantial funds required to finance the project and are seeking partners and sponsors to assist with funding.”

Initial concept designs from Opus International show over 100 raised flower beds, a kitchen classroom for preparation of fruit and vegetables grown onsite, a network of edible arbour covered pathways and a series of fruit trees in planters. It is suggested that the new development will not only be accessible for local children and schools but remain open to the public as an alternative events venue.
