Plans revealed for undulating International Test Cricket Ground in Auckland, NZ

Auckland-based design studio The Ministry of Architecture + Interiors (MOA+I) has shared their most recent civic project with WAN. As these elegant renderings demonstrate, MOA+I are developing a curvaceous international test cricket ground on the Auckland coast, overlooking the Waitemata Harbour.

The project is still in the very early stages but current designs incorporate players’ facilities, food and drink vendors, media and event spaces, and undercover seating for approximately 2,000 people. There is also capacity for up to 6,000 additional people in an informal seating arrangement.

Plans are to split the usage of this swooping cricket centre between professional games and public use, with the concept remaining flexible so that the grounds can host open air events such as community sports, music festivals and concerts.

The cricket ground would be located at the Tank Farm site in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter, on the edge of the Waitemata Harbour, a scenic area of the city popular with tourists and locals alike.

MOA+I explains: “As well as a response to the current debate on the future of New Zealand test cricket, the proposals look to work within the vision for the future of the Tank Farm site, as set out by the Urban Design Framework (UDF) for the development of a ‘robust and clear urban structure and network of open spaces’.
