Plans were revealed this week for a high level summit of architecture leaders in London

In association with the UIA and supported by Hines, the leading investment, development and management company, WAN is planning to make this inaugural event the most significant date in the architectural calendar. The event is also being sponsored by KONE, innovative global experts in elevators and escalators.

Michael Hammond, Editor in Chief at WAN explained: “For the industry, it’s a coming together of creativity and business, for us, it’s a natural culmination of everything we’ve achieved over the last seven years running architecture’s largest news machine. World Architecture Day is about inspiration and celebration but as with everything we do at WAN, it has to be underpinned by commerce, that’s why we’ll be looking at trends, hearing from clients, looking at design demands in the coming years. Getting ahead of the curve. It’s going to be an amazing day.”

One thing that is clear going forward is that the future is all about cities and to reflect that, a theme running through the day will be Better Cities, Better Lives, a UN world urban movement. This thread will culminate in the launch of World Cities Network (WCN), a new initiative which will bring together technology providers, real estate developers, architects, engineers, service providers and city leaders to share and develop practical solutions on how best to plan, fund, and deliver urban development projects.

The action-packed day will have a fast schedule of debates and presentations from an international line up of leading names in the architectural world with a parallel series of sub-events and workshops for those not involved in a particular sector.

Sponsors KONE installed the lifts at Cannon Place - the location for the highly-anticipated World Architecture Day event - as David Warrender, Director at Foggo Associates, architects and engineers on the project, explains: “The lifts at Cannon Place are a tour de force and we and KONE are very proud of them. What most people don’t realise is that all the trickery serves a very serious purpose and that without the KONE innovation which allowed us to do incredibly shallow lift pits and overruns we may not have had a scheme.”

Delegates registering for World Architecture Day 2012: London will receive six month’s complimentary membership of WCN and receive regular updates about city workshops and exclusive news on development plans for many of the world’s cities.
