New building designed by Opus marks the University of Waikato's 50th anniversary

The University of Waikato, New Zealand, is to mark its 50th anniversary with the construction of a multi-million dollar flagship new building for its law and management faculties. Opus Architecture have designed the building and the plans for house Te Piringa - Faculty of Law, Waikato Management School’s Centre for Corporate and Executive Education, and student services were approved by the University’s Council last week. It will also create space for new law research centres: the Maori and Indigenous Governance Centre, the Centre for Environmental Resources and Energy Law and the Waikato Management School's Institute for Business Research.

The new building will provide teaching rooms, offices, dedicated spaces for postgraduate students, shared student services, shared computer labs, a reception area and a ceremonial space for meetings with university visitors. It will also include a fully functional moot courtroom, and a sunken courtyard. A striking rectilinear five-storey construction with vertical sunshade vanes will comprise the office tower, referencing the tukutuku reed panels in a traditional meeting house. The tower will be linked at ground level to the existing Management building on Hillcrest Road.

Head of Facilities Management John Cameron said: “Our architects, Opus, have provided an environmentally sustainable design featuring a green roof, natural ventilation and glazed corridor walls for natural lighting. The new building will join our Student Centre, completed last year and the first five-star green building in the Waikato region, and the award-winning Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, overlooking the campus lakes." The project is due for tendering in 2013, and for completion in 2015.
