Do the best cities plan their development, or do they happen by happy, or unfortunate, accident? The rise of technology in determining the development of cities through non-traditional methods means that this new initiative is pretty important in my view. World Cities Network can help explore, explain and perhaps eventually predict future trends and opportunities in the built or virtual environments which make up the world's cities. I welcome this initiative and look forward to its progress.

Fascinating and successful case studies of smart and sustainable developments are multiplying in cities across the world. If we are to really leverage best practice and innovation, we need an organisation like the WCN to help practioners keep up to date with new solutions and to link together the many different disciplines involved in creating our urban futures. Having a central source of knowledge and a team monitoring new thinking will be of great value.

WCN will be a significant contributor to resilient cities if the interface between urban design and ICT can be mastered then harnessed to drive low impact lifestyles, as it will be mid-size cities which will absorb the highest proportion of the worlds population growth and where delivery of low carbon footprint energy and consumption will have the most profound impact on climate change.

WCN to be launched at World Architecture Day London

WAN is delighted to be a founding partner of an exciting new initiative to accelerate the development of sustainable cities. World Cities Network (WCN) will bring together technology providers, real estate developers, service providers and city leaders to share and develop practical solutions on how best to plan, fund, and deliver urban development projects. WCN will provide news, education, and relationship building opportunities on a worldwide basis.

WCN is being led by Brian Kilkelly who was previously Senior Vice President, Global Partnerships at the Urban Land Institute in London. During his five years at the Institute, he created the Urban Investment Network - a public-private collaboration platform that attracted cities, developers, and investors from across Europe. Previous to ULI, Brian held development roles at Age UK, Marconi, and Ericsson. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and a graduate of the University of Birmingham.

WCN will be formally launched at World Architecture Day, London on 1 October 2012.
