Redevelopment of the central entrance area of Nuremberg's trade fair centre

The Mitte (central) entrance of Nuremberg's trade fair centre was redefined by a 20 m high steel slatted roof measuring 256 by 57 metres. It spans the forecourt of the trade fair centre and forms the roof of the new entrance building. All in all, only 12 columns support the entire roof construction; each column thus supports approx. 1,000m² of the roof. With a height of 17m and a diameter of 160 cm at the base, tapering to 120 cm at the top, they are, up to now, the largest spun concrete columns in Europe. The fundamental elements of the roof construction are the 2.5 meter high slats. They were constructed as steel trussed girders with always the same elements. The rigid joints of the upper chord facilitate the complete abandonment of bracings on the roof level. As a result, the transparency of the air-filled ETFE cushions is not affected.

A new multi-function conference hall was built inside the entrance hall. Raised above the entrance level, it appears to almost hover and permits an unobstructed view of the trade fair park. The almost 1,500m² floor slab of the hall is supported by five sculptured concrete columns. The thickness of the slab varies analogue to the bending loads. The skilful implementation of the structural concept intends to install constructive beams of ideal static height within the slab between the tapered columns. Only a thin upper and lower slab was built between the beams, the inside remains hollow. As a result, not only could the total weight and the reinforcement with it be reduced, but above all the material consumption was also reduced. The effective static construction element dimensions permit an architecturally sophisticated geometry, which can be spanned over 30 meters with optimized material requirements.
