Construction set to begin on major Minneapolis transport hub blending transit connections and cultural facilities

Designs for a hybrid transit hub and open public space initiative have been released by EE&K a Perkins Eastman company and Knutson Construction. Concepts for The Interchange - which is due to begin realisation this July - comprise a series of civic spaces including grassy expanses and stepped plazas supporting a large-scale urban transit station.

The transport hub will host over 500 trains on a daily basis, with more than 1,900 daily bus trips and many miles of bike and walking trails encouraging local Minneapolis residents to take a greener approach to transportation. Located next to the Target Stadium in the Minneapolis North Loop neighbourhood, it is thought that this will become a buzzing development for ‘a new civic identity and community pride’.

Peter Cavaluzzi FAIA, Principal at EE&K a Perkins Eastman company, details: “The Interchange will be the nexus of transit and culture in Minneapolis, a high-quality series of places for residents and sports fans to connect, circulate and gather. We are proud to be able to work so closely with Hennepin County, Knutson Construction, and the rest of the dynamic team to create a work-class destination for residents and visitors alike.”

Supporting the transit functions of The Interchange include a sweeping staircase connecting upper and lower plazas which will offer a series of potential entertainment spaces. These can be used for informal chats or performances as well as a basic means of getting from A to B. There are also plans to introduce a generous green park with basement parking space for 250 cars. Surrounding this will be opportunities for cafes and entertainment venues while the central space will provide an area for concerts, sports and community events.
