A strategic 32.5 km (14 mile) bridge linking mainland Shanghai with Yangshan port opens this month in Donghai just outside Shanghai. Yangshang is expected to become the biggest deep-water in northeast Asia when completed in 2010. Construction of the 's' shape bridge took just two and a half years and cost 10 billion yuan ($1.2 bn) which included 30% overruns on the original budget due to piling difficulties.
