New building for Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo by Archipelagos

The design for the Academy of Performing Arts new building, part of Sarajevo University, was unanimously chosen through an open design competition. The eight-storey 6,000m2 building will be located on the tight site measuring 730m2 in the city centre. Expected to be occupied by 2010, the building will house educational facilities as well as public performing spaces. Based on international success of its alumni and teaching staff it is considered one of the most influential educational institution in Bosnia and its wider region. Therefore, it was of the uttermost importance for the new building to negotiate complexities between its prominent public role and its programmatic requirements as an educational institution. Winning entry by New York based architectural office Archipelagos, headed by Architect Jonus Ademovic, solved this problem by radically reinterpreting the proposed program. Rather than organizing space by departments, as required by the brief, it regrouped programs based on their use and need for natural light. Therefore all practice rooms and labs are located on subterranean levels; administration and classrooms on topmost levels. Between them, as an intermediate public level, are located Main Theatre and Mediatheque with the Library. The grand staircase as part of this level, functions as an informal gathering space for students. The system of ramps acting as the main communication spine, leads from the ground floor, open to the plaza, to the rooftop which will serve as an outdoor cinema and performing space. The institution of Academy is also connected with Sarajevo Film Festival, which will use the facility during the duration of the festival in the summer months. Together with The Museum of Modern Art by Renzo Piano, this building is considered as one of the vital cultural projects in the post-war reconstruction of Sarajevo.
