A truly bizarre concept to place a large temporary structure on top of an old building for which it was not designed and perform cooking for public dining purposes? From a life safety perspective, it seems a little counterintuitive....

Also hard to imagine the attention and popularity of something like this at a time of austerity in Europe....

The Cube begins it's term in the UK capital

It arrived in London last week: The Cube - dining with a view, the temporary restaurant that has been travelling around Europe since last year. After its first appearance in the Brussels skyline on 1 April 2011, the restaurant arrived in Milan in Piazza del Duomo and finally stopped off on 1 June in the British capital to celebrate the Olympics Games until 30 September on the roof of the Royal Festival Hall in Southbank.

At the same time its twin structure is going to be in Stockholm from 18 June to 21 October. The restaurant is designed by Park Associati, an Italian studio from Milan in collaboration with Electrolux. They realised this flexible and glamorous structure to lean on the more tall and suggestive places around Europe.

The structure has been wrapped in a shiny aluminium skin. The sinuous shape is emphasised by the white colour and a pierced surface, which, mixed with large glass facades, creates different transparency effects and frame evocative glimpses of the city.

“It creates a diamond that can be lean of the roof of the city and change just temporarily the skyline of the cities” said Michele Rossi one of the Park Associati´s architects. Use of the most advanced technology in heating solutions guarantees the arrangement of the module at every climatic condition. The restaurant can welcome 18 guests around only one rollaway table.

The interior is composed of one open space and visible kitchen where a selection of the best chefs in the country prepares a tasty meal. The total floor area is 140 sq m including 50 sq m of terrace. The structure is created to be built and dismantled quite easily. The module is designed as a temporary pavilion, but with a complexity of a permanent structure.
