Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pail tapped to design Movie Museum in Beverly Hills

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, best known for handing out Oscars, has commissioned Los Angeles based spf:architects and Renzo Piano Building Workshop to design a Movie Museum in Beverly Hills. The two will transform a 325,000 sq ft historic art moderne building designed for the May Company in 1939 into a contemporary space that will tell the story of movie-making.

“Renzo’s track record of creating iconic cultural landmarks combined with Zoltan’s success in transforming historically significant buildings is a perfect marriage for a museum that celebrates the history and the future of the movies,” said Dawn Hudson, Academy CEO.

The new museum will be a transformation of the Wilshire May Company Building which dates back to 1939 and was once a top department store in Beverly Hills. After Renzo and Zoltan have worked their magic on this regal structure, whose golden cylindrical entrance has been a treasured feature for many decades, the new Movie Museum will sit alongside the Broad Contemporary Art Museum and the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Exhibition Pavilion on LA’s Museum Row.

“We as architects make buildings that are portraits that represent our clients," said Piano. "The Academy museum will take the visitor through the back door of cinema, behind the curtain, and into moviemaking magic." Pali, whose firm has shephered the expansion of the Getty Villa museum and other cultural facillites, said of his selection: “It is an honour and privilege to work with the Acadmeny in bringing to life a historic, iconic building that I love with the story of motion pictures”.
