Bortolotto redefines the rest stop with Oakville Transit Building in Ontario, Canada

Designed by Bortolotto, a leading Canadian architecture and interior design firm, Pit Stop was designed to provide the Town of Oakville’s public transit system staff a place for bus drivers to rest, refresh and refuel. The design is inspired by movement and speed, angular in plan and section this pavilion is intended to evoke the image of a fast moving bus.

Pit Stop is situated on a small vacant parcel of land encircled by a paved surface bus stop area tucked behind a newly built big box mall. Its striking triangular shape is elongated, conceived of as a beacon that prominently stands out against its lacklustre, suburban surroundings.

This pavilion serves two primary purposes acting as both a staff only facility while at the same time providing the Town with a sculptural piece located within an open public space that presents itself at the intersection of crossing pedestrian paths.

“Our intention was to provide the client with a vibrant, healthy and accessible staff facility,” said Tania Bortolotto, President of Bortolotto Design Architects Inc. “And in the end, we were not only able to achieve these goals, but also provide the Town with a new community marker that distinguishes itself from the compact suburban landscape that surrounds.”

Aluminium panels are arranged angled and horizontal and compliment the adjacent existing bus shelters at the site. The lunch area component is differentiated on the exterior using a light yellow solid core fibre cement board. Pit Stop is orientated in such a way that provides bus drivers the ability to maintain views to their bus and its shelter from while within the lunch room. Pit Stop is 124 sq m and includes an outdoor area that contains a heating and cooling unit.
