Shigeru Ban's 'House of Shoes' opens in NY
Last night, to much fanfare, Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and Spanish shoemaker Camper officially unveiled a new rooftop structure at the Camper store in Soho, New York. Consistent with Ban’s work, the triangular structure, which is a nod to a gable roof, is made of paper tubes. The store is Camper’s first owner-occupied building in New York and Ban’s first retail project in the United States.
As storm clouds loomed, hundreds packed their way into Camper’s new ‘House of Shoes’ on Prince Street, which has 1,200 sq ft of retail space on the ground floor and 1,200 square feet of basement storage below.
Following a press preview and Q+A, guests rocked to the musical stylings of DJ Matt Kays while enjoying delectable Spanish dishes such as gazpacho, wine, cava, and Spanish ham.
Guests in town for New York Design Week joining hosts Shigeru Ban and Camper General Manager Miquel Fluxá included architect Dean Maltz, who worked with Ban on the project, Georgia DeLuca, Hitomi Watanabe, Joel Fitzpatrick, Alex Mustonen, Kimry Blackwelder, Sonja Nuttall, Rafael de Cardenas, Gisue Hariri, and Nary Manivong.
