Local architects complete PROBIOMED campus with tilted roofscape in Tenancingo

PROBIOMED is a special enterprise in Mexico geared to research, development and production of biomedical products, such as vaccines and pharmaceutical components for medicine. Located in the small town of Tenancingo in the State of Mexico (150 km. southwest of Mexico City), it has been developing a high technology campus for biomedical research and development. The first component in the campus is their own plant, which has been expanding and modernising through a planned process.

Grupo de Diseno Urbano, together with Antonio Plá architects were hired to prepare the master plan, architecture and landscape architecture of the campus, plant, laboratories, offices and the corporate dining hall for employees and executives. The campus will contain similar companies and future projects for the company.

The dining hall was located in the higher portion of the site, in the midst of an old avocado orchard. Taking advantage of the slope, a potable water cistern was located next to the building, creating a still water mirror which partially surrounds the dining hall, creating a pleasant aquatic landscape.

The roof form was tilted towards the north façade to open views to distant and near mountains and to capture natural light. The inclination of the roof allows rain water to be deposited in the still water fountain and into the cistern. The building has natural cross ventilation allowing windows to open and close. The dining hall has become an important social centre where scientists, employees, workers and executives interact, as well as a space of tranquillity, relax and meditation.
