Modest Studio for an Artist scheme wins New Zealand National Architecture Award
Ashley Cox Architect’s humble Studio for an Artist composition has been awarded a Small Project Architecture Award by the New Zealand Institute of Architects. The purpose-built space was defined by the shifting pattern of the sun at the site location, with considerable dialogue between the architect and the client regarding the difference between daylight and sunlight and the advantages to an artist of a south-facing aspect.
The New Zealand Architecture Award Jury said of the project: “A simple and singular strategy, and within that a series of good decisions intelligently implemented, has produced an ideal space in which to paint and draw. Defining a boundary to the street, the portal-framed building steps down the sloping contour of the site to produce three spacious platforms, bathed in natural light from south-facing skylights which echo the roof forms of the neighbouring cottage.
“Large sliding windows frame views into the garden from which, as evidenced by the works occupying the generous wallspace, the artist draws considerable inspiration. The studio is a delightful realisation of the art of architecture.” The three-level studio is a modest project which perfectly fits its unique brief, permitting vast quantities of natural light into a generous open interior space with ample room for large-scale artistry.
Twenty projects were awarded NZIA National Awards. From among the Award-winners, the jury will select the recipient of the 2012 New Zealand Architecture Medal. The Awards ceremony will be held at the National Museum,Te Papa, Wellington, on 25 May 2012
