New Jersey hospital design addresses need for expansion as a result of growing patient numbers

This project expands and reorganises an existing emergency department of a community hospital with the focus on improving the delivery of medical care.  Located in a resort area near the New Jersey coast, the hospital experiences a doubling of the population it serves during the summer months. The task was to address this unique requirement while also providing for future growth.

The five-phase project creates separate areas for a traditional emergency department, fast-track services, pediatric and behavioral health and links them in an efficient layout that improves privacy and safety while imparting a calm demeanor and general sense of well being.

The challenges of the project were to transform a community hospital to a regional health center, rebrand the facility in recognition that it has a new owner / operator, Meridan Health, and to give it a new front door that would take it out of the definition of a community hospital. All the work had to be done while the facility remained in continuous use, which meant the emergency services, vehicular and pedestrian circulation had to be optimally maintained, hence the need to phase the construction in to five discrete phases.

The expressive form of the canopy, which references sails of a ship, acknowledges the building's seaside location.  The interior finishes and furnishes, which includes cultured stone interior walls and glass, are at high level as part of the brand upgrade.
