Zaha Hadid Architects designs sustainable exhibition centre for NunbergMesse

One of Europe’s largest exhibition sites has released designs for a new 8,000 sq m hall conceptualised by acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid. The cavernous volume is more restrained than the majority of Hadid’s portfolio projects with a softly curving roof and large panes of glass through which natural daylight will shine, illuminating the space and reducing the facility’s energy dependencies.

NürnbergMesse, one of Europe’s largest exhibition companies, has striven to keep the new building as sustainable as possible, keeping it in line with the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur nachhaltiges Bauen (German Association for Sustainable Building) guidelines in order to make the exhibition centre the first on its books with the sought-after certification.

NürnbergMesse Managing Directors, Dr. Roland Fleck and Peter Ottmann, explain: “The attractive building will function as a hinge between the buildings in the east and south of the exhibition site in future. It will do full justice to the architectural standards at this outstanding location. On completion of hall 3A, NürnbergMesse will have more than 170,000 sq m of display space to offer in halls and foyers.”

Costing €36m, ZHA’s design includes a 95m by 85m flexible hall which can be altered to meet the needs of a variety of exhibition displays. Two glazed facades permit vast amounts of light and treetop-style or slatted fans characterise the south side of the building. The outside wall on the south side overhangs slightly and solar protection is afforded by intelligently formed facades.
