SOM's One World Trade Center surpasses the Empire State Building as tallest in NYC
For months its glistening form has thrown its neighbours into the shade and as of now, Skidmore, Owing & Merrill’s (SOM) One World Trade Center - formerly the Freedom Tower - has been crowned New York’s tallest building. Constructed at a speed to rival Renzo Piano’s The Shard, One World Trade Center has raced up at incredible speed despite various onsite issues. In February it was discovered that a design flaw could raise the total cost of the building to a staggering $3.8bn as a temporary station was found to be blocking access to an underground public area.
Until yesterday the tallest building in New York was the iconic Empire State Building, a spire that has punctured and defined the city’s skyline since 1931. A steel beam labelled with the number ‘1,271ft’ was lifted into place at the top of the One World Trade Center building yesterday (Monday 30 May, 2012) stealing the Empire State Building’s title with a margin of 21ft.
