Mahan Rykiel designs a playful landscape in memory of Pierce J. Flanigan III

The dedication and grand opening of Baltimore's newest waterfront amenity, Pierce's Park, will take place on 6 May at 2PM. Mahan Rykiel Associates designed the new park located at Pier 5 between the Columbus Centre and Eastern Avenue. The park's play features include a live 'willow tunnel' and custom designed interactive sculptures.

The park includes two play areas, one for older children and one for younger children. Connected by an inscribed 'Ribbon Walk', the unstructured play areas feature landscaped berms, open green areas and large climbable sculptures. For the younger children, the park features a living willow tunnel, two interactive sculptures and a musical fence. Mahan Rykiel worked with national expert, Bonnie Gale, for the design and fabrication of the willow structure, built last autumn with help from area residents and many children. David Hess created the interactive sculptures in the park.

Scott Rykiel, Executive Vice President of Mahan Rykiel, said: "This is one of those remarkable and gratifying commissions that we were able to push the design limits while creating a space that absolutely will improve the quality of life for kids in Baltimore. I'm sure Pierce would be beaming at the results of his wife and children, who put their hearts and souls in this project, to create this park in his honor".

The park was designed as a memorial to Baltimore contractor and civic leader Pierce J. Flanigan III. Inspired by his life and legacy, the family of Pierce J. Flanigan III spearheaded the creation of this downtown park that will bear his name. Known as a successful businessman and patron of the City, this new park will be a celebration of his life-long interests in nature, sailing, music and literature.

The park is a project of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore Inc. in partnership with the Flanigan family.  The Downtown Baltimore Family Alliance supports this effort.  Selected by the family to design this park, Mahan Rykiel has created a unique open space that will engage children and families as part of the Inner Harbour landscape.
