New modern healthcare facility by URS Corporation opens in Ohio 

Cleveland Clinic Avon is a new healthcare campus situated on a 40-acre site on the western edge of Greater Cleveland and on the eastern side of Lorain County. The facility expands the Clinic’s range of services to the area and its commitment to these communities. The initial phase of the project is comprised of two major structures: a four-storey Family Health Center of approximately 125,000 sq ft and a two-storey ASC (Ambulatory Surgery Center) of 70,000 sq ft.

The ASC houses an outpatient surgery center, free-standing Emergency Department with 24-hour service, and an Imaging Department complete with a Women’s Health Suite, Nuclear Medicine, CT and MRI. The two structures are linked by a central two-storey atrium that contains a retail pharmacy, conference center and cafe.

The inspiration for the design of the project was based around the patient experience and connection to the surrounding wooded site. This is first experienced as the entry boulevard brings the visitor into the site, traveling down the central green then finally received by the expansive entry canopy. Once in the central atrium, the visitor has direct connection to all major wings of the facility for ease of accessibility and building navigation. Maximised windows in the energy efficient curtain wall system flood daylight into the waiting rooms and provide views back out to the central green, giving the visitor a built-in means of orientation.

Another feature of the project which enhances the patient experience are the areas of retreat for the patient and visitor spread throughout the project. These areas included, a 'healing garden', rooftop garden and small lounge areas. Another unique challenge of the design was to allow for two more phased expansions. It is anticipated that the ASC building will expand first followed by a 5-storey bed tower in the future.

The site also has a large wetland area and zoning requirements for over 800 parking spaces in the first phase. In addition to these constraints, there is also a helipad on the property, a utility outbuilding and a series of rain gardens which add to the LEED Certified design of the project. The design team integrated these requirements into an elegant landscape design that is organised around a central green that presents a strong presence for travelers on the adjacent highway and visitors within the campus.
