New hospital improves children's recovery through family-centered care

The overarching goal was to create a place full of inspiration, with a sense of unexpected discovery and thoughtful distractions, in an environment that is comfortable for all ages in the 9-storey, 334,000-sq-ft Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. Careful thought was given to the selection of materials used, such as bamboo doors on patient rooms and entry doors to provide a non-institutional quality. A number of custom-designed elements and furnishings, such as the sculptural, wood pendant light fixtures, are incorporated throughout.

Art plays a key role as one of the guiding principles, intended to enliven spaces and create destinations within the hospital. For example, each hospital floor is assigned an animal found in one of four regionally-inspired colour palettes for interior finishes. That animal is repeated in environmental graphics throughout the floor, for example at the eye level of a toddler standing at a nurse’s station. The combination of regional colour palettes and animal imagery provides an integrated system that also assists in wayfinding and in establishing a graphic identify for the hospital.

Family-centered care with a priority, as studies have shown that children heal better when their family is directly involved. Unique two-storey, glass-enclosed family lounges are a good example of this and a rarity in a hospital settings. Designed to mimic a home environment, the lounges enable families to gather and share a meal, watch television, etc. Also, patient rooms are private and equipped with a double sleeper sofa for family members as well as wardrobe closet and storage space for personal items.

Amenities for families and patients are abundant throughout the hospital, further contributing to an atmosphere of hospitality: family lounges that provide respite and relaxation; a wellness centre for families to work out; family resource room where parents can do online research about their child’s diagnosis; movie theater with 15-seats; activity rooms to host bingo games, scrapbooking and other events; playrooms for younger children with toys, books, games; dedicated art studio for group or individual art projects and a 'Teen lounge' featuring computers and gaming software, TV and foosball table
