Perkins+Will designs a technologically advanced, agile and efficient hospital that retains its distinct regional flavour

HUSVP has been servicing patients for more than 95 years and is the oldest and largest hospital in Medellin, Colombia. The new facility located in Rio Negro, Colombia, focuses on specialised units that cater to a wide range of services from intensive care hospitalisation to rehabilitation. The client’s objective was to program and plan a new facility with the latest technological advances based on US hospital processes and LEED accreditation, while providing interior spaces that would inspire healing and wellbeing.

Along with their local partners, Perkins+Will include and designed larger single patient rooms, intuitive wayfinding, day lighting and sustainable initiatives, all considering the patient and family first. The goal was to provide their patients, family members and staff with a sense of security and a place that would reflect the culture and history of the 95-year-old original facility.

As the first LEED certified hospital in the country, the facility includes 260 Patient Rooms, Oncology, Imaging, Intensive Care, Emergency Care, a Women’s Clinic, Outpatient Day Hospital, Cafeteria, Clinics for Rehab, Cancer, Digestive and Plastic Surgery, all of the administrative support services and an on-site cathedral.

The hospital’s commitment to sustainability is inherent through the use of the local materials and building details common to the region. The local brick material used on the exterior facades was carried into the interior spaces, marbles and terrazzo tiles available and fabricated within the country were used as the general flooring and wood veneer from nearby forests were specified.

This new facility is designed with clean, contemporary lines and is very respectful of the history and culture of the main hospital. The design met the client’s vision while adhering to the fundamental institutional needs of a hospital that is run with honesty and respect.
