Cleveland Clinic adds new laboratory building to consolidate four labs on its main campus
Perspectus Architecture's objective as defined by Cleveland Clinic Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute was to design a flexible laboratory space to accommodate future growth and technology advancements. The three-storey, 138,000-sq-ft building was designed from the lab bench outward. The concept focused on developing an ideal module for the lab benches and its application to other design considerations. The lab module influenced a rational approach that addressed programmatic relationship, building scale, context and campus master plan requirements.
The formal composition was developed by programmatic groupings: Laboratory areas, Administration and Support Spaces. Public spaces are visible from the street. Offices are organised per the lab module to unify the floor plan. The module in the lab defines individual work aisles organised around utility service chases. Service loops are located within the ceiling plenum of the labs with vertical services chases on a module that is aligned with the column grid to maximise clear lines of site throughout the open lab area. The open lines of the site provide a key safety feature in the clinical lab environment. Future services can be extended to all areas by isolating each work aisle and incorporating new services within the open chases.
PLMI processes 15,000 specimens a day and performs 12 million tests annually for hospital and outreach patients, providing the highest quality laboratory testing and pathology diagnosis to patients regionally and nationally. The carefully planned design allows PLMI to realise efficiencies including a nimble supply chain management system, streamlined work flows and greater improvement opportunity with a modular laboratory layout. The expansion and relocation of four laboratories will enhance patient care by allowing Cleveland Clinic to provide more sophisticated testing and faster turnaround times. Cleveland Clinic has a benchmark of LEED Certification for all new construction projects. The new building is currently tracking LEED Gold.
