HKS realises vision of guest-focused care in new medical facility

Building on the vision set by the Ahuja family, University Hospital’s Ahuja Medical Center is a world-class facility where care is delivered in a personalised way. The design of this 144 bed hospital connects to the community while breaking down the barriers of traditional hospitals. Infusing hospitality into the design allowed the team to transform the traditional paradigm of 'patient care' into one of 'guest care' - where the human experience is the focus. The balance of form and function creates an environment where people work, live and heal.

The first step was putting forth guiding principles to steer the design process and serve as the basis by which future design decisions would be made. These principles prescribed features such as proximity to natural light, elements required to improve patient safety and the need to build an environmentally friendly building. One of the key concepts that drove the functional relationships of the design was to break down the conventions of traditional departments and reorganise the facility to improve patient safety, staff efficiency and flow. The result was a hospital organised to consolidate non-invasive functions on the first floor, invasive services on the second floor and support services in the basement.

Leveraging the latest research and technology, a set of patient safety related items was developed to guide the design. This included standardising work spaces and placing the toilet on the same wall as the bed for better access. On a more global perspective, the unique patient unit design was developed to maximise caregiver access and communication as well as improve efficiency. The project uses state of the art principles in making the hospital environmentally friendly. This includes maintaining the site’s wetlands, orientating the bed tower to maximise passive solar energy and a green roof. These strategies resulted in a LEED Silver Certification.
