SOM design major new medical facility in Abu Dhabi in joint venture with TILKE and ICME

Conceived as 'three hospitals under one roof', the new Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) is a 300,000-sq-m, 850-bed medical complex that will combine a General Hospital with a level 1 trauma centre and tertiary Women's and Pediatric Hospitals. Envisioned as a 'city within a city', the design defies the typical model of a medical centre and creates a bustling campus-like environment of distinct character, vibrant public spaces and a sense of community.

The medical city, designed for SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2016. Ideally located at the city's centre, the new replacement facility will rise at the heart of the existing 36 hectare SKMC campus. The building's 2-storey base will house an intense array of medical functions shared among the three hospitals (from outpatient clinics to the emergency department, radiology and operating theaters). Embedded in this base and at the heart of the medical city is a vibrant 'town centre' of lobbies, cafes, retail, prayer rooms and education spaces that offer a welcome respite for patients, visitors and staff.

Above this two-storey town centre will be a shaded rooftop oasis, 'The Common', that offers a generous outdoor space for relaxation and quiet contemplation. This innovative use of the roof of the diagnostic and treatment base activates 2.3 hectares of central open space for public use. Rising above the green roof, the bed towers, embedded with their own hanging gardens, will give identity to the individual hospitals and address the specific needs of each patient population.

A separate and discrete Royals Pavilion is also provided. SKMC will be the largest hospital in the UAE and the first to achieve an Estidama sustainability rating (2 Pearls). The project will utilise both state-of-art, high-efficiency systems as well as historic regional concepts to mitigate Abu Dhabi's harsh desert climate.
