HSPC completes new hospital on Victoria's coastline

The architectural brief developed by the state government health department, the hospital and the consultant team for this stage 1 project included for new inpatient surgical, medical, paediatric and maternity beds, birthing suites, neonatal ICU, combined ICU / CCU and a rehabilitation unit. A new integrated ambulatory care centre is also co-located on the site accommodating GP’s, dental clinics, hospital in the home, social welfare and counselling, podiatry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and community mental health services. Deakin University medical school also have lecture theatre and laboratory accommodation integrated with clinical areas that they share with nursing education.

Planning innovations include sustainable technical solutions such as hydronic in-slab heating and cooling, chilled beams and gas fired combined heat and power units. Rainwater is harvested and stored on site for irrigation of landscaping and dialysis water is recycled through a dual pipe system for toilet flushing. The model of care innovation is reflected within the planning and includes 'swing beds' between inpatient units and flexibility of generic spaces for integrated care teams to 'front load' the care of ambulatory patients within the community.

Architectural images are inspired by abstracted elements of the local coastal environment, the sea and the strong identity of the Shipwreck Coast. External facades are a combination of double glazing; pre-cast concrete in a sand and textured finish juxtaposed with free rusting steel. Blue and foam green aluminium panels evoke an image of the sea and summertime in this popular beachside holiday destination.

The development has created a new point of entry with a distinct identity appropriate for the civic importance that the hospital has within the Warrnambool community, the entry / drop-off leads to a double height foyer and reception that also accommodates a public coffee shop and retail areas selling patient aids and consumables. The foyer is overlooked from the university lecture theatre and student common rooms.
