College of Music expands with two new campuses in Valencia and Boston

The Berklee College of Music is undergoing a drastic international expansion project having opened a new base in Valencia, Spain by Santiago Calatrava in January 2012 and begun construction on a new $100m building in Boston this past December. Designed by William Rawn Associates, the 160 Massachusetts Avenue campus in Boston is due for completion in late 2013 and will encompass 155,000 sq ft of education space.

Towering to 16 storeys, the Boston building will include eight recording studios designed by acoustical consultancy the Walters-Storyk Design Group (WSDG), with a live room scaled to host a 60-piece orchestra, technical suites, classrooms, a film dubbing theatre, and a three-storey, 4,000 sq ft dual purpose auditorium and dining hall. This 400-seat space is finished with a two-storey glazed wall which looks out onto Massachusetts Avenue.

WSDG’s John Storyk details: “Commissions on the scale of Berklee’s Boston and Valencia projects are rare in today’s economic environment, but these will be extraordinary campuses. We engaged the most advanced predictive acoustic modeling software and have incorporated the latest acoustical and technical developments in every facet of our design to insure the highest degree of future-proofing for these studios and teaching labs."

In parallel with the US building, Berklee College of Music has celebrated the completion of its Calatrava-designed Valencia Campus, also designed in collaboration with WSDG. The East Technical Wing offers 18,000 sq ft of space with a 1,360 sq ft recording studio, four production studios, and various classroom spaces.

Guillermo Cisneros, VP of Global Initiatives/Executive Director, Berklee in Valencia explains: “The facilities are extremely attractive, with classrooms, tech labs, recording studios, production suites, an auditorium, ensemble rooms, and a lot of other great features. And Valencia itself has a lot of resources, with more musicians per square metre than anywhere in Spain. A big advantage for any Berklee student is that these two campuses will be interconnected, and will complement each other. The students from Boston will be able to participate in activities on the Valencia campus, and vice versa.”
