Promoting wellness through community at the Beijing International Medical Service District

The new Beijing International Medical Service District comprises a prototypical environment for healing, discovery and education. The residents in this development will pioneer a new level of interaction promoting well-being. The development, eventually spanning 15.1 sq km, will include a variety of clinical, research, educational and specialty facilities providing world-class care delivery while fully supporting its own community.

A design vision of interconnectivity injects salutogenic principles into the development, calling for physical, digital, and social connections to promote wellness. These connections ease the stress of patients while fostering greater relationships with caregivers. An overarching theme of the traditional five Chinese elements is represented in surrounding parks to further connect rich Chinese culture with the new community. Preventative care is the driver, with a goal of evolving Chinese medicine from a life-saving to wellness philosophy and increased outpatient activity.

The city will be the first to fully integrate consumer technology with healthcare services, allowing residents to access healthcare information at all times. For a 'whole-lifestyle' approach, educational facilities from pre-school to university are included, along with senior living, wellness, and rehabilitation components. Each hospital within the greater community has its own distinct character – from initial transport drop-off, to wayfinding elements. A below-grade 'city' supports safety and security of all the facilities and activities above, providing emergency services, loading, and waste management.

The hospitals are orientated to maximise views of nature and promote access to outdoor environments. They surround a 'Broadway' boulevard, which connects all health-related entities with cultural and retail destinations. To maintain the health of the Beijing watershed, the public parks connect the community to arteries of the regional watershed. Open space buffer zones along the water bodies preserve habitat, biodiversity, water quality and natural hydrology. A transportation strategy extends subways / light rail and motorcoach network, as well as promoting walking and biking.
