Heller Manus announced as design architects for Niagra Falls Gorge scheme

Hornblower Canada, Co. has been awarded an extensive boat tour and landside facilities scheme at the Niagra Falls Gorge in Canada by the Niagara Park Commission, working with Heller Manus Architects as design architects. The competition-winning concept suggests a series of three fabric structures at the mouth of the complex, sheltering visitors to the Falls and acting as a recognisable feature on the horizon.

In addition to these tent-like structures will be a visitor’s centre, private riverside events space, boat landing facilities and an entry pavilion. An existing red brick building will be utilised as an events centre with café, various event spaces, restrooms, storage facilities and other similar amenities. Visitors will access the water either by elevator or in a shuttle tram which will take a pre-existing road down to the awaiting boat, however Hornblower Canada are responsible for producing a new boat landing area.

Clark Manus, FAIA, CEO of Heller Manus, Partner in Charge of the project, said: “Our success - following Alcatraz landing in San Francisco and The Statue of Liberty in New York - demonstrates the value of design in the educational tour experience for the natural wonder of Niagara Falls.” Construction is due to commence on the project in spring 2014.
