MDW Architecture & Jean Nouvel join forces

MDW Architecture have recently received ‘Best Futura Project’ at the 2012 MIPIM Awards with their collaboration project with Jean Nouvel. The winning scheme is a proposed extension of Charleroi/Danses with the addition of a new police headquarters.

The two existing cavalry buildings will undergo a retrofit to adapt them to low energy standards, helping to maintain the sustainable intentions of the scheme. In this regeneration dance studios and artists residences will be developed in a bid to art and culture into the centre.

The most dramatic element that has been proposed is the ‘vertical wing’ a 75m-tall elliptical tower. The vertical wing has been designed to be a passive tower, and will house the new police offices and facilities. Upon the roof of the houses a large tent has been placed which will become the new foyer-belvedere. All these elements have been given connections to a large central Plaza which aims to draw the public in by direct accessibility from the surrounding streets and public brassieres as a social aspect for people to engage with.

The architects have been keen to promote all aspects of sustainable and green architecture with the build and the tower uses passive solar energy systems to reduce its impact on the environment. Coupled with the careful introduction of new materials and technologies into the existing building that help reduce energy loss and waste, the complex will not only be a focal point of the town because of the impressive form but also as a model of sustainable architecture.
