PDRc win international design competition for major urban project in central Shanghai

PDRc, led by Peter Verity, has won the major international design competition for the design of the banks of the Suzhou River in the Putou District of Central Shanghai.

As part of the Shanghai Suzhou River Rehabilitation Project, PDRc concept of ‘The Shanghai Ribbon of Life' sets the vision for the river to become the catalyst for economic growth and urban renewal. ‘The Shanghai Ribbon of Life' will form a people-orientated continuous environmental corridor weaving the city together through the rich historic, cultural and educational areas and buildings - including the creation of twelve new museums and galleries as well as the Morganshan Area of contemporary art.

Using the Suzhou River as a significant contributor to the sustainable urban growth of the city, facilities and amenities will be linked by a network of water buses, water taxis, and recreational bicycle paths while a surface people mover system will connect with the metro stations. Ultimately it is envisaged that the ‘Shanghai Ribbon of Life' will form a continuous pedestrian-orientated amenity corridor potentially linking the Bund to the Shanghai city boundary.

The Suzhou River rehabilitation project has already excavated from the river 1.3 million cb m of toxic industrial sludge and the natural ecosystem with a rich biodiversity is beginning to re establish itself.

As part of this major imitative for inner city urban renewal the design includes a major new 50 hectare city water park in Putuo District. This enhances the connectivity of the city by using the river as a vital element in the park. Through a series of new river crossings, this enables the development of connectivity both along the river as well as between the communities on either side.

PDRc have now been appointed to develop their winning competition entry and it is expected that implementation of the initial stage will begin later this year.
