Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. design the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein Moise Safra Auditorium and Conference Center

Conceived with a mandate to act as a symbol and new front door for a hospital campus, the auditorium reflects the client's intention to create Brazil's preeminent auditorium showcasing cutting edge healthcare technologies, celebrating the Jewish community of Sao Paulo and creating a new focal point for the existing medical campus.

The 110,000 square foot building with its 500 seat auditorium featuring state of the art sound and lighting systems, is designed to accommodate events as varied as major presentations, small concerts, and religious ceremonies. Above all, the auditorium building acts as a material representation of the hospital's foundation: a commemoration of Jewish contributions to contemporary Brazilian life.

Secular in appearance, Jewish symbolism is nonetheless found throughout. The building's very form is derived from a need to orient the auditorium in a manner consistent with synagogues and Jewish practice. The design team negotiated constraints such as an asymmetrical hillside site, existing infrastructure, buildings in close proximity, and several security concerns to produce a unique canted, angled form which intersects with the geometry of the existing hospital campus. The cantilevered shapes and protruding angles open slices of light to the interior and serve as a dramatic welcome to visitors.

While the form is singular to the auditorium, it does not ignore its surroundings. Angles, entrance points and materials were derived from the adjacent buildings in order to ensure that the new building is contextual to the campus. Pragmatic additions include underground parking to help alleviate some of the congestion issues on campus as well as an expansion of the hospital's educational facilities. Combined with a large multipurpose space and an auditorium which serves both secular and religious purposes, multiple and ever-changing uses ensure that the building is as dynamic and dramatic on the interior as it is on the exterior.
