Vivek Dixit and Partners create a unique home among an urban chaos

The project is a demonstrative example that ‘Redevelopment' does not mean only knocking down a structure and rebuilding but it can be achieved by conserving and replanning around the existing structural elements. Design includes the reuse of window panes, sash bars, wastage of flooring, old wooden planks, wastage of glass, glass bottles, packaging wood along with the use of local wood by highlighting these in the interior spaces. Design elements use low embodied energy material like ferrocrete and treated bamboo. Use of local stone in product design like furniture elements, flooring patterns and stone louvers to create a venture effect for ventilation. Various strategies are used to achieve comfort like Earth tube cooling and courts to get precooled breeze. Placement of window openings as inlets and outlets based on critical calculations provide good cross ventilation for residence and studio activities. High level openings take out hot air and allow day light to illuminate the entire depth of the space.

The design philosophy respects the existing landscape and allows it to be integral part of the indoor space. The studio's design revolves around a large sculptural mango tree on the site. Each area of the studio gets a pictorial view of the tree. Contemporary colour scheme of white walls and wooden flooring interspersed with blue accents complete the fresh ambience. Vintage furniture items blend harmoniously with modern pieces to give a sophisticated edge to the studio's simple elegance. The family's ethnic bend towards culture is reflected in the traditional elements which are highlighted with a contemporary makeover.

Very few are privileged to own a ‘Spa' like home - a retreat made of natural materials- to be used all year long. The owners are proud of their little ‘Great Escape' from the urban chaos.
