Pair of education facilities in Ireland remove corridors systems for social integration

The project in Bantry is comprised of a 700-student Post-Primary and a 186-student Primary school co-located on a site on the outskirts of Bantry, a busy market town and fishing port on the south west coast of Ireland at the head of the famous Bantry Bay.

The aims of the designs for both schools include eliminating corridor spaces in favour of three-dimensionally connected continuous social spaces. The design also creates a relationship between the buildings using a similar formal language to create the sense of a single entity comprised of an ensemble of complimentary parts, with the regulating lines of the smaller Primary school, which is encountered first, pointing toward the Post-primary school.

The new design integrates and converses with the terrain manipulating the roofscapes in accordance with the functions beneath to form an artificial landscape reflective of the ridgelines of the rolling hills which form the backdrop from the north and the jagged coastline which forms the backdrop when viewed from the hills to the south.

The project responds fully to the rigours of the DES Brief. As a result of all of these the project creates a rich tapestry of stimulating social spaces and places, internally and externally, which will greatly contribute to the user finding his or her place in society.
