PPAG designs new campus in Vienna separated into 'learning yards' 

The concept behind the campus model is present at every scale of the building complex.  This manifests itself in the configuration of the desks, the spatial differentiation of the classrooms into quiet reading areas and more interactive work areas, in the actual orientation of the classrooms and their relation to the outdoor spaces and interior market space, in the arrangement of each 'educational cluster' within the entire campus and in its organisation as an innovative urban fabric, thus forming a vital part of the urban development zone 'Hauptbahnhof' (the new central railway station) in Vienna. In this sense the project also realises the urgent pedagogical paradigm shift for the entire city at the macro scale.

Situated in the urban development area of the 'Hauptbahnhof' the campus project - consisting of kindergarten, primary and junior high school - is based on the new and ambitious education guidelines of the city of Vienna. The project promotes a typological paradigm shift with regard to the spatial articulation of classrooms and interior-exterior activities across the entire campus.

The classrooms, project areas and teacher's rooms are organised around a central market space in a 'cluster' fashion. Each school is provided with separate access to the urban surroundings; the school buildings are individually connected to a main 'common core' consisting of visually and programmatically permeable dining areas, a library and a multipurpose hall, which is connected to the sports facilities below by a generously wide staircase.

In order to provide every classroom on both levels with a designated outdoor classroom, the classrooms on the first floor have been set back horizontally thereby allowing for interior-exterior activities across all programmes.

The outer facades of the campus buildings also form the inner facades surrounding the open spaces. These are divided into three 'yards' each with its own function i.e. an activity and social yard, a crafts and educational / learning yard, and a yard for small children. This allows students, disregarding of age, to become socially interactive encouraging an exchange at all levels of learning experiences throughout their 'educational carrier'.
