Rintala Eggertsson Architects bring architecture into the hub of contemporary life

Rintala Eggertsson Architects is a free-thinking unit composed of architects from different cultural backgrounds, working with projects in different locations ranging from the jungle of Southern India to the Arctic tundra in Canada. The office was established in 2007 and is based in Oslo and Bodø in Norway.

The team sees architecture as a communication, a language, which is a primeval expression of their understanding of our place in the universe. The architect's responsibility is to hear the silent voice of local building dialects and whispering of forgotten languages. In other words, to take care of the human biodiversity. Moreover, with architecture it is possible to send a meaningful, educational and precise message to the entire society and in this way try to bring architecture in the centre of the values discourse and thus into the hub of contemporary life.

Rintala Eggertsson Architects design philosophy can be communicated through the following projects:

Scale and economy
Focus on the quality of space, material and natural light while minimizing floor area.Energy conservation throughout the entire life cycle from raw material production and construction site to the heating of the house. Project: Boxhome, Oslo, Norway.

The Natural landscape
Create site-specific structures that are well adjusted to the terrain and climate. Treat surrounding landscape as physical and contextual material that cooperates with the architectural idea. Anchor the exterior into the nature on the other hand allowing nature be present within the interior. Project: Seljord Watchtower, Telemark, Norway.

Cultural Reading
Architecture defines cultural identity. It creates fruitful collages that become meeting and fusion points of local and global, old and new. Inclusion and managing of complexity through narrative and poetry rather than exclusion and reduction. Project: Element House, Anyang, Korea.

Education and engagement
Let all the participants of the project be well informed of the philosophy and goals behind the activity so they can spread the message. Organise hands-on design & build workshops with clients, users and students to ensure ownership, social engagement and local empowerment.

Sensorial Experience
Design spaces and atmospheres that enhance the use of senses. Use materiality and natural light to create an atmosphere where it is possible to be present in reality and focus in what is essential and meaningful in the given context. Project: Forest Observatory, Kirishima, Japan.

Functionality
Design structures that have a technically sound life-cycle from production to use to disposal/ recycling. Prefabrication, careful design of details, dynamic solutions that can be transported, put up and adjusted easily by the users. Project: Graph, Emergency Architecture Unit.
