Candalepas Associates describe the importance in design in reaching the final product
Candalepas Associates holds the philosophy that the practice of architecture requires the subtle interplay of preparation and action. Often the concept of preparedness and design is subjugated to time-tabling to facilitate abstract and inconsequential outcomes. Candalepas Associates like to think before they act. Where examination should be sought and an evolutionary process articulating clarity and thinking should be addressed, quite often a cloudy malaise of ‘value management', technical obfuscation and poor prioritisation of issues ensues.
Design is an absolute. In it one can seek for fine and logical answers despite the constraints. It is an organic fluid process reaching out for subtle and reposeful outcomes that are timeless. The opportunity should thereby be to embrace a fluid and open discourse between client and architect and to allow time for full and proper discussions, many site visits, many drawings & models and a series of refinements over the course of the project.
Joseph Albers, the great artist, said that 2 + 2 must equal five in art. In this sense, Candalepas Associates' work must therefore be unmeasurable and this unmeasurable sense can only be dealt with at the particular site that is the place for the work. Even then, subtle minor details; a smell, a sound, a movement of air, a light quality, the neighbour, the street as found in its detail, and all those little apprehensions within the real experience may enliven or diminish the experience; an impossible thing to record, even with today's technology. We cannot see what we see. Angelo Candalepas has said always that a great building can be sensed without the necessity of vision; all other senses are equally important and they form subtler apprehensions.
