LEED Platinum facility by Perkins+Will takes natural systems as inspiration 

The University of Florida Clinical Translational Research Building (CTRB) serves as the major catalyst for developing models and synergies in ageing and geriatric medicine research and education, muscular dystrophy, diabetes and health care across all Colleges and Departments at the University. Located within the Health Sciences District of the Gainesville, Florida campus, the CTRB is the home of the NIH funded Institute on Aging (IOA) and the Clinical Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). These two institutes are joined in a single facility that is one of the first of its kind.

The CTRB combines flexible and adaptable clinical space, dry labs, research and office space for various departments in the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health and Health Professions. Inspired by the principles of the Biophilia Hypothesis the project emerges from the inherent human affinity for natural systems and processes. The concept 'sustaining life itself provides healing' emerged from the desire to provide sustainable healing, working and educational environments. A leaf is drawn in the canvas of the site organising the project footprint into vein-like channels which filter and transmit storm water to an on-site retention basin.

The leaf’s central spine unites the IOA and CTSI by creating a collaborative courtyard with therapeutic planting. The clinical and support, research, and office components of each institute are joined by shared multi-purpose spaces, conference / collaborative rooms, café and main entry lobby. Sustainable strategies for achieving a projected LEED BD+C Platinum include photovoltaic panels, rainwater and condensate reuse, under floor displacement ventilation, waste steam reuse from adjacent cogeneration plant and an overall building energy use reduction of up to 50%.
