tp bennett completes new flagship secondary school in North London

tp bennett was commissioned to design ‘Heartlands High’, a brand a new secondary school that was set to be a local flagship for the UK Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme. In response to the Council's vision for a ‘1,100 pupil high achieving, inclusive, multi-faith community comprehensive school that is flexible enough to accommodate current and future trends in learning’, the design has been developed to enhances the learning process ina number of ways.

The building creates a new landmark that positively and yet sensitively addresses the local Common so as to inspire learning and achievement. Whilst changing the character of the locality, the new school will enhance it too, creating a symbol for education in the 21st Century.

A ‘Community Centre within the School’ creates a wide range of opportunities for the whole of the local community, providing flexible accommodation that readily accepts changing needs and giving the community a building that can be fit for purpose throughout its life. The design breaks down the large building into a series of distinctly separate places that will have a smaller scale and intimacy that will support students of all ages.

Providing a concentration of ICT rich, media focused accommodation that will support the schools specialism, the design uses passive supervision and careful planning to create a building where everyone can be seen to help to ensure their safety and to help to make them feel safe.

The school accommodates students with autism through providing them with a home base that offers them the space and privacy they need whilst allowing them to be an integral part of the school community, as well as providing access for all into and throughout the building, ensuring that everybody can travel through the same principle circulation routes.

Heartlands High creates an environmentally sensitive new school through restoring and re-using a contaminated and run down site for a community building that utilises a high proportion of recycled and sustainable materials to create a highly insulated environment that minimises energy use and produces some of its own energy.
