Bang Architects transform Calais Peanut Factory with vibrant orange mesh facade

From nuts to skating fanatics is the theme of this industrial conversion by French practice Bang Architects, which remakes a former peanut factory along a canal in St. Pierre into a skateboard park and builds upon a larger urban renewal effort nearby at La Cite de la Dentelle. The project creates a new gathering space for the area’s youth; an oasis, if you will, in a bleak yet transforming urban landscape.

Bang Architects makes the most of the existing building’s structure, retaining most of the shell to save on costs and to reduce the carbon footprint while upgrading the building’s image with a few brilliant moves.

A new brightly coloured orange mesh screen creates a permeable skin that lets light and air into the building and heightens personal safety and allows passers-by to witness the activities unfolding within, thus enlivening the otherwise mute structure and laying the groundwork for it to become a beehive of activity.

On the interior, the ceiling has been retrofitted with melanin baffles for soundproofing and new skate joinery of Finnish Birch plywood has been constructed.
