JCY completes new training facilty for WCIT

Designed to address the skills shortage in WA resulting from the recent mining boom, this project provides the highest quality of trades training in the areas of building, construction, metals, light manufacturing and electrical. The various workshops are located in a linear arrangement along the length of the building and are all able to be opened up to each other with large glazed folding doors so they can be used separately or together. All enclosed support and equipment areas are contained in a continuous spine on the eastern side of the workshops and all classrooms overlook the workshops on a mezzanine level above.

The roof, a tricoloured set of undulating metal stripes, provides a wonderful pattern highlighted by light and shadow from the school above. The western elevation which is adversely impacted by the heat of the setting sun provides an outstanding opportunity to create a moving and dynamic two-layered facade of yellow, grey and black sun-shading blades and an openable glazed façade separated by a pedestrian and student walkway which serves all areas. This mixture of cleverly designed, highly glazed frontage with large glazed open garage-like doors and the western-most layer fronted by the dancing array of tricoloured vertical fins brings the whole project alive and creates a sense of light and movement from within and outside of the building and the site.

The building is set within an indigenous remnant and new landscaping which grounds the whole dynamic of the building into a uniquely Australian environment of eucalypts, bushland, grasses and coloured sand. To the north is the lively yet simple cafe environment which, while only basically a lunch room, creates a sense of vibrancy more typical of a commercial cafe environment. Adjacent to this area the administration functions of the facility provide an entrance for all visitors as well as a service gateway for deliveries.
