HASSELL design new school
HASSELL in association with JAWS Architects (Hobart) have been appointed to masterplan and design a new middle school at Kingston, Tasmania. The briefed area is 8,600sqm to accommodate 750 year 7-10 students. The design embraces the latest pedagogical thinking with project based learning in a flexible open plan learning environment moving away from the traditional classroom model.
Sustainability is a key driver for the school and the masterplan has been designed to integrate the buildings into the landscape and environment with sustainable materials, green roofs, wetlands, vegetable and native gardens. The design embraces passive solar and low energy design and maintains views of the Derwent River from every building. Geo-thermal and wind technology is being investigated for heating and cooling.
The new School is being benchmarked against the Green Star-Education pilot tool, developed by the Green Building Council of Australia and will be submitted for GBCA rating upon availability of the tool to achieve "Australian Excellence".
Construction is to commence end of 2008 and opening envisaged for the 2011 school year.
