BDP make connections in Zhengdong after winning Transit Hub Masterplan competition

BDP has been named as winner of the Zhengdong Transit Hub masterplan competition in Henan China. The competition was organised by the Zhengzhou city authority and the 300 hectare plan, embodying over 2,000,000 sq m of development, sets out proposals for the environs of its new rail and bus stations.

The city lies on one of China’s most important transportation crossroads and this new transit hub will service major high speed rail routes between Beijing, Shanghai and Xian. Over 200,000 passengers will be able to flow through the station each day and the proposals will create an environment which establishes easy links between the city and its new transport infrastructure.

The vision, which recognises the rich culture of the area, is to create a memorable identity for this quarter of the city, with elements designed at a human scale to enable pedestrian movement and encourage community and social interaction. The masterplan is constructed around a distinct sequence of pedestrian movements which will help guide passengers through attractive landscape spaces to new retail, commercial, residential and cultural amenities.

The principal retail area will form a direct connection between the railway station and Four Seasons Park, a major linear green space at the heart of the plan. The retail area has been designed in the form of a Winter Garden which will provide protection from wind and rain, whilst allowing in natural light.

Its spaces are carefully integrated with the park which is also designed to be enjoyed at all times of the year. Four Seasons Park also creates an attractive address for a number of towers located along its margins. The towers are staggered in plan and with a series of mid rise blocks will create a balanced composition that helps to establish a hierarchy of pedestrian friendly streets and spaces.
