Art gallery in São Paulo experiments with contrasting constuction materials

This art gallery in Sao Paulo by local architecture practice GCP Arquitetos not only experiments with contrasting materials such as tubular steel, visually heavy concrete and crystal-clear glass elements, but looks to maximise its sustainable credentials with eco-efficient solutions of ventilations, illumination and reuse of water.

Galeria Concreta is a construction of great simplicity, luminosity and fluidity with a modern language, focusing on the intrinsic elements of an eco-efficient building. The superstructure is formed by beams and white tubular steel columns which form thin porches supporting the lateral façades, glazing, roofing system, mezzanine and stairs.

The main façade built in ‘in situ’ concrete, casted with rough horizontal timber forms, presents a horizontal opening, functioning as a sort of shop window, showing design, sculpture and art pieces of reduced size which together with the large vertical opening next to the concrete façade, allows the external observer to glimpse the gallery interior.

The ground floor restroom is built in the same style as the main façade, as a small solid box of concrete, detached from the steel structure, as a Brutalist counterpoint to the lightness of the white steel structure and the transparency of the glass.

The building is split into two areas; the public, with exhibitions area; and the partially-private one, constituted by an open patio that allows controlled access and circulation between both, also allowing additional natural light and ventilation to all galleries. The mezzanine, beyond the administrative area, is also able to receive small exhibitions or to serve as support to the gallery events.

The floors of the ground level are finished in polished concrete as are the exhibition areas, with ceramic tiling in the bathrooms, and Linoleum finishing in the mezzanine floor area. The design follows sustainable concepts therefore the rain water is collected, treated and used in the toilets flushes.
