Hunters & Partners Limited complete the Barkantine birthing hotel in London

Hunter & Partners are working as a part of the East London LIFT PFI consortium, providing a series of new healthcare premises ranging from £1M - £12M throughout the East London area for the Primary Care Trusts of Tower Hamlets, Newham and City & Hackney. The aim has been to develop new community focused, primary health care facility promoting a wide range of treatments tailored to the area’s needs in a facility that encourages community involvement and flexible use of the resources. Of all patient contact with the NHS, the overwhelming majority – about 90% - occurs in general practice. Deprived urban areas, where health need is greatest, suffer from a disproportionately high number of substandard premises. These facilities are intended to address these potential shortcomings in Healthcare provision. Barkantine, a One Stop Primary Care Centre on the Isle of Dogs is a result of a direct response to the challenges set out in Sir John Egan’s 1998 report “Rethinking Construction”. This is part of the first wave of Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) initiatives, forming the main thrust of the NHS ProCure 21 scheme. On 8 January 2008, the first baby was born on the premises. Jake Saez, was delivered at this pioneering birthing “hotel” in a special pool. Having these facilities available could transform the maternity care in central London.
